What inspired you to pursue a career in project management within engineering?

My passion for overseeing complex projects from design to completion drew me to this field. The opportunity to network and stay updated with the latest technologies was a significant motivator. Managing diverse parties has honed my problem-solving and communication skills, making this career truly fulfilling.

That’s interesting! Could you describe your role and responsibilities as an Assistant Project Manager at Puretech Engineering?

As an Assistant Project Manager, I lead a team that completes electrical design scopes. My daily tasks involve preparing design drawings, coordinating with the construction team, and conducting meetings with stakeholders to ensure project progress and address client concerns.

How do you manage and lead your team to ensure timely project deliverables?

My approach revolves around clarity, support, and continuous improvement. I provide clear responsibilities and deadlines, offer guidance when needed, and encourage autonomy. Sharing lessons learned helps avoid past mistakes and promotes growth. This strategy ensures timely, high-quality project deliverables.

Can you describe your approach to chairing design meetings?

I prepare thoroughly by reviewing design documents and identifying potential issues. During meetings, I present clear design inquiries and suggest solutions, demonstrating technical competency. At Puretech, I emphasise collaboration, working closely with all parties to develop feasible designs and provide practical on-site constructability advice.

That’s a great way to encourage innovation! How do you foster an open-minded philosophy among your team members?

I encourage critical thinking by asking for team members’ views and solutions. We discuss multiple ways to solve problems, fostering creativity and innovation. I provide constructive feedback, recognise innovative ideas, and create a safe environment for expression. These strategies enhance productivity and innovation through creative and collaborative thinking.

Could you tell us about a challenging project you worked on and how you managed it?

One challenging project involved a tight design phase schedule with limited manpower. I conducted a thorough task analysis, created a detailed scope of work, and identified critical areas needing support. By presenting a well-thought-out plan to management and maintaining open communication throughout, we successfully completed the design phase on time.

What aspects of your job do you find most rewarding?

Continuous learning, helping others grow, and receiving recognition from colleagues and supervisors are highly rewarding aspects of my job.

How does Puretech Engineering support your professional growth?

Puretech Engineering has been instrumental in my professional development. They’ve provided training opportunities in essential BIM (Building Information Modeling) software like Revit and Navisworks. I’m also pursuing my Professional Engineer certification with guidance from our in-house Project Engineer. Additionally, the management offers resources and manpower to help me run my projects successfully.

On a different note, how do you unwind and destress during your downtime?

I take deep breaths, seek advice from superiors for perspective, and break tasks into manageable steps to regain confidence. I also use downtime as an opportunity for enjoyable and fulfilling learning.

Tell us something unique about yourself!

I’m young at heart and quite active. I play badminton up to four times a week for fitness and enjoyment.

What advice would you give to fresh graduates entering the field of project management in engineering?

I recommend starting with a small to medium-sized enterprise (SME) like Puretech. SMEs provide hands-on experience and a broad scope of responsibilities. You’ll be involved in various job aspects, and decision-making is faster, creating a dynamic work environment. This experience helps build strong core working habits and prepares you for any construction environment.
