When was the last time you did something you wanted to do, despite being afraid to try?
For me, it wasn’t anything elaborate but returning to football after nearly 20 years. I had played regularly back in school, but the thought of returning to the sport and keeping up with much fitter regulars made me hesitate. Eventually, after much deliberation, I plucked up the courage to join a game.
The first session was a challenge, but once I settled into the pace, I rediscovered something I had missed: the simple joy of playing. Looking back, I’m glad I didn’t let my doubts outweigh my desire to get back into the game.
In this issue’s cover story, we feature Francis Wong and Lim Pin Hui, who each took a chance on internships without knowing where they might lead. Francis ventured into internships in different countries, while Pin Hui, a visual communications graduate, tried social media marketing despite it being outside her field of study. Both eventually landed full-time jobs and came away with more than they expected.
With the job market becoming increasingly competitive, internships are becoming a bigger part of how students enter the working world. They offer a chance to explore your interests, experience different working environments and find out what you might want to pursue next.
If you’re still weighing your options, our industry guide looks at some of the sectors experiencing growth, with insights into career opportunities and the skills employers are looking for. If there’s something you’ve been considering but keep putting off, perhaps it’s worth giving it a shot to find out what might come of it.
